Fat guy

While on the subject of woodworking videos, I filmed another just a few hours ago. I wasn’t going to publish it right away, but considering that I may not be around a lot this weekend (and I have to work tomorrow), I may as well get it published immediately.

This video concerns the sharpening of a Superior rip saw I picked up at an antique store. I hope you enjoy it.

***The title of this post will make sense if you happen to watch the video***

  1. Greg Merritt says:

Dang! That’s a little cold and why I have steered away from video. I DO have more belly and far less hair than I would like. LOL

“Gullet” I think is the word you were looking for. The video looks good, plenty of light. The sound is good as well. There were a few spots were the working noise muffled your voice, but nothing major. I don’t have a clue as to how to address anything, just giving a little feedback, for what it’s worth.

This is a good “real world” sharpening video. Your on your way….

    • billlattpa says:

Yeah, and this person had very little room to talk. I honestly don’t like to brag, but I’m pretty trim for my age.

I did this video using the iPhone camera and it came out better than I thought it would. You could tell that I didn’t have a mic at times, but overall the sound was fairly steady.

I probably could have taken more passes with the file, but I just wanted to give a general idea. The good news is that the saw went from dead to usable in 15 minutes, which is really all I wanted to show. More time could easily have been spent on pitch and set, but I have a pretty strong feeling that it would have gotten boring very quickly.

I’m not sure how many of these I will do. There are so many people out there that have professional recording equipment and who happen to be very good woodworkers on top of it. I just did this because people have asked to see me “in action”. I think I may do a small project next and after that just do a video every few months or so.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s much appreciated!

  2. Brian says:

Not bad compared to most videos on YouTube. I think you did a fine job.

    • billlattpa says:

Thanks Brian! I did the last two with an iphone and I think they turned out okay considering. The videos I did with an actual video camera didn’t turn out as nicely. I wish I had a little more time and money to invest in doing a better job.

  3. Kinderhook88 says:

I can’t believe someone called Captain America fat! Trolls will troll… Dude, you’re nowhere near fat. But you didn’t need me to tell you that.

    • billlattpa says:

Don’t get me wrong, I like to be around 190, which I call my “fighting weight” and right now I’m hovering at just over 200, but I’m hardly fat, at least I don’t think I am. Either way, I appreciate it!!

  4. Frank says:

good video, quality of picture very good, as I have hearing probs. sound is not good. not your fault. It seems the traditional way are sharpening, well proven.

    • billlattpa says:

Thanks! I’m trying to improve the sound in any way I can, because it is uneven. I did a few videos using a video camera and a microphone, and the sound was good, but the picture was less clear. The past two I did with an Iphone and the picture was much improved, I just need to figure out a way to get the sound quality on par with the picture.
